Christmas Tree Memories

Christmas Tree Memories

Yesterday was a long day for me as I decorated my Christmas tree. The reason it took so long was because I took the time to pause and reflect on the many ornaments I placed on the tree. Feelings of nostalgia crept into my soul and it felt great strolling down memory lane. You see, I still hang up ornaments from my childhood, my dad’s first ornament, the ones my students gave me over the years, and first ornaments for my own sons. I have ornaments given to me by colleagues and dear friends. Ornaments that represent our culture and interest. Who does not have a fleur de lis or two hanging on a branch or maybe even a NO Saints ornament?

My day began with retrieving loads of boxes from the attic that read Xmas decorations. The tree was up and now the tedious work to place each one of the ornaments in the perfect spot began. I’m not sure why, but instead of “grabbing and placing” the ornaments, this time I took a moment to think about that special memory associated with what I was holding in my hand.

From my childhood, there was this blue plastic Frosty the Snowman with a melted spot on the back. This was from some 50 years ago. My younger brother purposefully put it too close to the giant light bulbs. Remember those? Being the bossy older sister, I had claimed that ornament as mine and was teasing him about it. He showed me by trying to really make Frosty melt! Normal sibling rivalry, I guess!

Then there is this glass bell that is special. It once was beautifully painted red with white stripes and a blue top with stars. That bell hung on my daddy’s first Christmas tree. The year was 1923. It is old and delicate and the paint has come off on some parts, but for me, it represents Christmas of long ago. I loved hearing stories from my grandma telling of how they had real candles on the trees back then. I just imagine what a fire hazard that must have been.

So where exactly does the time go? My children have now grown into young men, but it’s not the perfect tree without their baby ornaments on it. There is the one for Ryan with a date of 1983. The one for Brandon is from 1985. Both of those ornaments and about four others comprise the early years. What a joy Christmas was back then. Those two adorable blonde-haired cuties opened up present after present. I miss their little faces and the excitement and joy of that moment. It is amazing the memories that flood back! Those were some of the best times of my life!

Speaking of family, you will find a few doggie ornaments hanging on some rather low branches. Each personalized with the names of our two beloved pets, Midnight and Isis. Both blessed us with unconditional love and companionship. Both were a special part of our family and that will never change. You see, even doggies need ornaments too!

When your working colleagues become dear friends, they remain in your life forever. I received special ornaments from some of them years ago. Placing those ornaments on the tree brought me back to a time when I was a young teacher. Having great mentor teachers help guide you to become your best self. You realize they are a blessing. Thoughts of those teachers resurface each time I hang those ornaments on the tree.

As a retired teacher of 37 years, I have had the opportunity to teach and nurture hundreds of children. They somehow magically become a part of your life and your heart. While decorating the tree, many of the ornaments from former students now hang on branches. Each one brought back memories. Memories of a cute first or second grade face beaming with joy as I unwrapped their gift.
Memories of our time together, the lessons learned and the joy we shared. Many of these students are grown now. Funny though, I still picture them as they use to be–when they were my kids!

How lucky am I? I have so many treasured memories tied to my Christmas tree. Even though yesterday’s decorating took a lot of time, it was time well spent. Let the Christmas spirit begin

  1. A beautiful story, Gayle!! I have ornaments like that as well, some from Mop and some that the girls made in school and their 1st Christmas baby ornaments and some from students of ours at Hahnville! I’ll never stop putting those up on our tree! I look at all the modern Christmas tree decorations that are so prevalent nowadays and think how pretty but they will never adorn my tree because they hold no special memories like the ones we put up year after year. So thank you for sharing your story with all of us and for letting me know I’m not alone!! Love you guys and Merry Christmas!!!

  2. What a beautiful Christmas tree story! You have helped me with my own indecisiveness of maybe buying new ornaments. I too enjoy all my ornaments, with each one representing a very special memory! So tonight I will start decorating! Merry Christmas!

  3. Thank you for sharing, Gayle. I loved the big bulb lights and the ones that bubbles. Thanks for rekindling some memories of my own.
